The Art Around Us

 

   I was reading some photography blogs this morning, and came across this article through a Twitter link.

 

It speaks about how familiar we become with the mundane, everyday, ordinary, things we see each and every day.

 

Things as mundane as a pot of split pea soup :)

The image on the left caught my eye as I was filling the pot with water, and the one on the right is the pot on the stove starting to boil.

I normally go through dinner prep listening to music or thinking about what else I need to do after dinner, so I’m not always looking for photo ideas. But, with that article in the back of my mind, I was able to see something ‘normal’ as ‘art’.

 

This is one of the things photographers can do so well! You don’t have to know all the terms, or own fancy equipment, simply capture what catches your eye. Not everyone may understand why I took pictures of peas in water, and I don’t think I’ll take pictures of every pot of soup I make in the years to come, but

these two images stuck out to me and now, perhaps, you can see why too :) Capturing the ordinary is a good ‘job description’ for any photographer. You could say it’s our duty to see everyday life in a with a different perspective, capture it, and present it to the world so the rest of us can stop, ponder, and maybe re-evaluate what we fill our lives with. Anyone can do it with virtually any medium…so take a look around you!

 

P.S. Split-pea soup will overflow when it gets to a rolling boil, so watch your pot :)
